Johnny's Seeds: Squash
Planting
June 18, 2004
In hills 6 feet apart
3 hills for each variety, 4 seeds per hill
Growth
Most notes on germination and plant survival were destroyed
in a rain storm, but I believe all seeds germinated. Surviving
notes, from September 17 2004 are as follows.
JSS Butternut F1: some leaves are being
eaten , probably by the striped cucumber beetle, a few squash
bugs seen, rather large vines, all vines growing and producing
fruit, fruit 4 to 6 inches long
Buttercup Green Bonbon F1: Most vines dead, squash vine
borer, lots of squash bugs and striped cucumber beetles,
small vines and few fruit
JWS 6858 Butternut: few leaves
eaten, few squash bugs, long vines, fruit mostly 4 to 6
inches, some longer
Harvest
Harvested on October 2, 2004
JSS Butternut F1: 17 fruit averaging 8
inches long
Buttercup Green Bonbon F1: 8 fruit averaging
6 inches in diameter
JWS 6858 Butternut: 21 fruit averaging
8 inches long
Taste
There was no difference in taste between the two Butternuts.
The taste was acceptable. I do not believe either one of
them were fully matured. The poor growing season affected these
squash more than the Buttercup.
The Buttercup was much better tasting. There was a rich almost
nutty flavor. It was a bit dry, but that may have been my cooking.
